Gilbert Hawkins was born in Wilmington, Delaware on July 29, 1929 to the late William and Agnes Hawkins. He was called home to eternal rest on January 12, 2017.
Affectionately known as “Hawk”, Gilbert attended Wilmington public schools and Saint Joseph Catholic School in Wilmington.
An affectionate and caring man, Hawk took on the responsibility of raising a family of 7 girls and started one of his earliest jobs at Allied Kid in Wilmington.
In 1979, he married Anna Moore. Together, they celebrated 37 years of marriage.
A dedicated man, for just as long as he was married, he worked for the Wilmington School System and retired as the chief custodian of the Wilmington Public Schools after 35 years of service.
He loved Jr Walker and the All Stars, The Temptations, but most of all, he loved James Brown and you could always find him on the dance floor, dress to the nine with a Bolero hat tipped to the side.
Hawk had an affection for the horses and loved to play the slot machines at Delaware Park, but more than that, he loved to watch his Philadelphia sport teams.
A great man, Hawk offered wisdom. He offered peace. A giving man, Hawk offered friendship, he offered hope, but most of all, a tower of strength, Hawk offered love.
Great men leave a legacy. Hawk’s legacy will live on through his wife, Anna B. Hawkins, his daughters, Sheila Sharp, Vanessa Sackes (Keith), Annette Denkins (Jesse), Loretta White, Alice Cornish, and Helen Needham, (Delmas), Helen White (Curtis), Deloris White, Yvonne Casen and the late Clara Wells, sister-n-laws, Helen Stanford and Octavia Manlove, his close cousin Joe “Buck” Hawkins, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends
Service will be held on Friday January 20, 2017 at Mother UAME Church, 701 E. 5th Street Wilm., DE 19801. Viewing 9-11 and service at 11 am.
