Robert Leroy Cooper, Jr., age 62 born to Robert Leroy Cooper, Sr. and Audrey H. Cooper. Robert was a
Firefighter for the City of Wilmington, Delaware for 13 years, retiring in 1993. He also worked as an EMT for the Wilmington Fire Company. Robert was a member of the Gallant Blazers Minority Firefighters for the City of Wilmington, Delaware serving as secretary and treasurer. He volunteered on the 2nd District Planning Board and ran for City Council for the City of Wilmington and the Red District School Board. He served his country as a Marine in 1972. Robert touched so many in his community by always lending a helping hand or a listening ear. He was the “go to guy” if you had a problem or issue in the neighborhood. He could always find a solution for you. Whether sweeping the streets every day or helping neighbors shoveling snow, and even washing their cars, he was always there to help.
Robert was also known for throwing down in the kitchen….he may have used every pot and pan and had things in disarray…..but the food was always good. He loved bragging about his sweet potato pie, and his fried turkeys. He also made a mean BBQ. He was known as “Mr. Mom”, always cooking, cleaning and watching his granddaughter Tierra when she was younger and enjoying the company of his grandson Syncere teaching him how to play the drums. He loved music especially jazz. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan always dressed head to toe in Dallas gear on game day.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert Leroy Cooper, Sr. and daughter, Stacia Mae Chapman.
Robert is survived by his children Keioka Lei Cooper and Robert Leroy Cooper,3rd. His mother, Audrey Cooper and siblings; Ronald Cooper, Sr.(wife Rosalind), Danette Cooper, Michele Gordy(husband K. Lamont), Ricky Cooper( wife Tonika) and Tyra Cooper. 2 grandchildren, Tierra Monay and Syncere Joseph, 24 nieces and nephews, 15 great nieces and nephews and 1 great great niece. A special cousin, Frederick Cooper that was more like a brother. The mother of his children Sheila Jackson and his companion and devoted friend, Laura Ames and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
A celebration of life will take place on Monday May 8, 2017 at 10 am. Viewing 8-10 am from Shiloh Baptist Church, 215 West 23rd St. Interment, Delaware Veterans Cemetery.
