Augustus Seward (Gus) Spencer born May 31, 1932, the 5th of 12 children born to the late George and Lillian Spencer.
Gus attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Delaware as a young child graduating from Howard High School. Gus then served in the United States Air Force as Airmen Third Class until being honorably discharged on February 4, 1956.
Gus made his home in San Jose, CA where he worked for the San Jose Unified School District for 20 plus years. Gus was a member of Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph’s church in San Jose, CA where he dutifully served as usher, you see Gus loved to tell others what to do. His last years Gus held the office of Head Usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #879. An avid sportsman, Gus’s first love was boxing and he worked as a boxing promoter for several years. Gus also enjoyed baseball, golf, kick boxing and marital arts.
You could find Gus partaking in a scrumptious meal with friends at his favorite restaurant. “Original Joe’s”. Gus lived a rich full life and loved serving the Lord. On his visits home over the years he would always give an offering to St. Joseph’s of DE. When illness took toll Gus called his baby sister, Estella, and arrangements were made to bring Gus home where he was lovingly cared for by his family in his last days. His sister, Estella, his niece, Mikko Gordon, niece, Dena Spencer, great nephew Scott Spencer, Devon Dickerson and Michael Gordon( great great nephews).
Gus is survived by his younger brother, Wilbert(Maze) Spencer. His devoted baby sister(24/7) Estella(Jimmy) Gordon, devoted friends, Charlie(Virginia) Gallegond and Jerry Maryayomo of San Jose, CA, a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
Service will be held on Tuesday August 29, 2017 at 11 am. Viewing, 9-11, St. Joseph's Church 1012 French St. Wilm., DE. Interment, Delaware Veterans Cemetery
