Amanda Ernestine Smith Powell daughter of the late Elethea Smith Mills departed this life peacefully at home on Sunday December 9 th , 2018 in Wilmington Delaware at the age of 79.
Amanda was and FOREVER remains the “ MATRIARCH “of our Family!!!!!!!
Amanda was preceded in death by her husband Melvin Powell, Brother Henry F. Smith and Cousin John R. Bell.
Amanda was born on September 10, 1939 in Charleston, South Carolina. Amanda was a 1957 graduate of Burke High School. She also attended Launese Phillips Business School of Charleston Upon graduation she became the secretary for Emmanuel AME church and later the secretary for the Attorney John H. Wrighten.
Amanda married Melvin Powell December 8, 1962. They relocated to Wilmington Delaware in 1964 to embark on a new life.
After moving to Delaware Amanda gained employment with State of Delaware Family Court where she became “Clerk of the Court” and was gainfully employed with the State until her retirement in December 1991. While employed at the Family Court Amanda met and maintained unbreakable bonds and lifelong friends whom she had continuous communication until her passing.
Amanda was a Faithful member of St Paul UAME Church. She transferred her membership from Morris Brown African Methodist Episcopal Church to St Paul UAME Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Monty W. Frazer. She was a member of the Senior Usher Board, The Busy Bees, The Missionary Society and the Executive Board of the UAME Conference. As a member of the Senior Usher Board she was very instrumental in making sure new and upcoming ushers were aware of the proper mannerisms and etiquette for female ushers. She remained faithful to all even when her health started to fade she made sure her presence was still known.
Amanda loved to travel and was known for information on the Best places to eat when you travel. You could always call Mrs. Amanda and say “I’m going to….and she would make sure to tell you to stop by…. They have the Best Food!”
SISTER, as she was lovingly referred to by all her siblings and seven 1 st cousins was the “BIG SISTER “ to all no matter the Bloodline tie to the Family. She was always there to offer advice, a helping hand or even just a listening ear. No matter when the Family needed “Sister “ she made sure to make a way to supply whatever the need may have been. “Sister” will definitely be missed by all. Her Generosity and comforting ways will FOREVER be engraved in our Hearts. The epitome of the poem “A Family of Friends “.
“AUNTIE “as she was lovingly referred to by all the neighborhood kids, will always be remembered as having the “Kool Aid” house in the middle of the block on 26 th and Monroe Street. All the neighborhood kids would come to play, get some food and drinks and even some love and discipline when needed!!! No matter who you were or where you came from, once you crossed the doorsteps you were one of her “Pumpkins” and she welcomed you with opened arms and a LOVING HEART. AUNTIE will FOREVER be AUNTIE to all her nieces and nephews and the neighborhood kids (HER PUMPKINS).
She leaves to cherish her memory 4 siblings Leo Smith Sr, Arthuree Melton, Edith Mills, Johnell Smith and a Devoted Sister in law Sharon Smith (Henry), Nephews and Nieces: Reverend Clifford Smith (Shannon) Reggie Smith, Leo Smith Jr, Reginold Brown Sr (Michelle), Wilbert Moultrie, Yolanda Morris (John), Clinton Brown Jr (Kisha), Octavia Smith, Terri Joi Smith, and Archie Smith (Chrissy), Loving Cousins Edward Dawson (Patricia), Thomasina Cook, Louis Smith (Jane), Georgetta Gadsden (Rev. Bernard), Irene Snipe and Leo Parker Jr., 1 step daughter Jeanette Fields . Senior Cousins: Dora Allston, Richard Brewer Jr, and Vermell Bass and other extended family members and friends.
Three faithful caregivers: Tyna Coston, Robin Goldsboro and adopted niece Brenda Miller, who were faithful until the end.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday December 18, 2018 at 11 AM, St. Paul U.A.M.E. Church, 3114 N. Market Street, Wilm., Delaware. Viewing, 9-11 am. Interment, Gracelawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
