Doris Elaine Sorden Laws

October 17, 1947 — November 3, 2019

Doris Elaine Sorden Laws, daughter of Lawrence N. Sorden and Lottie Clement Sorden, was born on October 17, 1947 in Wilmington, Delaware. She departed this life on November 3, 2019 at Christiana Care Hospital.

Doris received her early education at Millside /Dunlieth School. She graduated from De La Warr High School. Doris graduated from Delaware State University in 1969. While at Delaware State University, she joined the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Doris later received her master’s degree from North Western University.

Doris was employed by the State of Delaware - Division of Vocational Rehabilitation as a Vocational Rehab Counselor/Administrator. Later, she worked for Delaware Technical Community College as a Counselor of Veterans Affairs until her retirement.

At the time of her death, she was a dedicated Minister of People’s Baptist Church in Wilmington. Doris served as President of the Missionary Board, Choir Member, and Sunday Morning Praise and Worship Team Member. Doris also worked for the Food Bank of her church. Doris was known to shout her praises to the Lord every Sunday. She was the go-to for those battling disability claims.

Doris mentored a group of neighborhood girls to womanhood with ladylike conduct and faith in Jesus. She loved her family and friends fiercely, especially her son and only grandchild.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory, her son Ronald C. Laws, Jr., grandson Caleb, sister Bernice ‘Vinnie’ Sorden and two lifelong friends Cynthia D. Johnson and Tanya T. Crumpler along with a host of family and friends.

We can remember Doris always enjoying a good joke and would laugh to the point of tears and choking.

Doris was also known to be in an ‘Indian Giver’. It was no surprise for her to ask for something back that she had given you once she saw it on you.

Words that were improperly pronounced would cause her to raise her eyebrows and ‘clutch the pearls’. Doris required her girls to have a slightly elevated lift to their heads, a little bit ‘boujee’.

Doris was loved by many and will be missed by us all.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday November 14, 2019 at 11am at People's Baptist Church, 50 South Street New Castle DE. There is no viewing. Interment, Delaware Veterans Cemetery.
