Doris Hairston Loper was born September 22, 1928, in Martinsville, VA. She was the fourth child of the late George and Bessie Hairston. She peacefully entered into eternal rest after a long and fulfilling life marked by faith, service and love.
Doris began her education at Grace Presbyterian School and graduated from Henry County Training School. Her dedication to learning led her to Delaware State College and later to Virginia Union College in Richmond where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. Committed to lifelong learning, she continued her studies at the University of Delaware.
A devoted educator, Doris taught in public schools for more than 30 years, shaping young people with patience and compassion. She was also a proud lifetime member of the Phi Delta Kappa Rho Chapter sorority, reflecting her commitment to education and community service.
Doris first married Edward Willis and from that union, a beloved son, Stephen Willis, was born. Later in life, she met and married Edward Loper, Jr., with whom she shared many happy years.
A woman of deep faith, Doris remained an active member of the Presbyterian Church throughout her life. She served faithfully as Clerk of Session, sang joyfully in the choir and participated in leadership at the Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly levels.
Beyond her service and teaching, Doris found joy in traveling, gardening, bowling, and sewing. She approached life with curiosity, creativity and grace.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth Miles and Paige Moody, and brothers Lenwood, George Jr., and Edward. She is lovingly remembered and survived by her son, Stephen Willis; nieces Carol Cannon, Paris Hairston, and Suzanne Lee; nephews Paul Moody and Edward Jr. and many cherished relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Doris's memory at Hanover Presbyterian Church, 1801 Jefferson St. Wilm., DE 19801 on Friday November 21, 2025. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a remarkable woman who kindness, wisdom, and faith touched all who knew her. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire generations to come.
