Harry J. Smith Jr. was born in Philadelphia, PA. on March 19, 1952. He was the third eldest son of the late Harry J. Smith Sr. and the late Irene L. Smith. He was educated in the Wilmington Public School System attending Drew/Pyle Elementary Schools, Bancroft Jr. High School, and graduating from Howard High School in 1970. Harry graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. It was at the University of Delaware where he met and married Roslyn Woodard. From this union twin boys Harry Smith III and Thomas Smith was born.
In high school Harry was an above-average student. He was a member of the National Honor Society. Harry also excelled in sports. His love affair with sports began at an early age as a member of Christina Community Center's basketball and softball teams. He continued playing sports throughout his school career lettering in basketball, baseball, football, and golf at Howard High School. At the University of Delaware Harry was a member of an intramural basketball championship team. Harry played summer softball with Summer Madness and The Nomads. Harry played the trombone in the school band and was a member of a soul band called The Soul Statics. Harry’s trombone sounds can be hear on several recordings by The Mellow Souls band. Harry was also served his country in the US Air Force.
For many years Harry worked two full-time jobs to support his family. He worked at the US Postal Service and at the State of Delaware.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents Harry J Smith, Sr. and Irene Smith-Turner, wife Roslyn Smith, sons Harry Smith III and Thomas Smith, daughter Cherrise Whye, brothers David R. Smith, Kendall M. Smith, and Charles E. Smith.
Harry is survived by four brothers Anthony C. Smith (Roberta), Ronald G. Smith (Lolita), Kevin Smith (Judy), and Duane Smith, one Aunt Helen Hudson of Philadelphia, PA and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
