Larry Goodwyn,Sr.
January 15, 1949 - February 27, 2018
In the early hours of February 27, 2018, the most heavenly father in his wisdom took Larry Goodwyn Sr. home to eternal rest and peace. He was born January 15, 1949 to the late Eddie Lloyd Sr. and Beatrice Goodwyn in Wilmington, Delaware.
Goodie, as he was affectionately called received his early education in the Wilmington Public Schools, graduating from Wilmington High School where he excelled in track and cross country. His first real job was at Union Park Pontiac. He then became employed at the Phoenixville Steel Corporation dedicating 20 years of service. Goodie continued his career at the Christina School District and retired as Chief Custodian at Palmer Elementary.
Goodie was raised in the 8th Street Baptist Church. He loved good gospel singing. He also attended Canaan Baptist Church on occasion with his mother-in-law the late Mother Lillian Bacon and his late wife Debbie. He enjoyed hearing the word of God preached especially by Pastor Bullock. Goodie loved the Lord.
Goodie met his sweetheart Debbie in the 7th grade. He pursued her till she said “I do.” They were united in holy matrimony on February 24, 1968. From that union three children were born; Larry Jr (Boo), Di Shawn (Di Di) and Eric (Pepe). Later they were blessed with nineteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Anyone that knew Goodie would tell you he was a no-nonsense kind of guy. He was a straight shooter and told you exactly how he felt. He was sincere, honest and trustworthy. He had the best sense of humor and he always kept you laughing with his stories.
He loved shopping, especially going to Philly to shop for a new hat (skimmer) to set off his outfit. He enjoyed family gatherings and family trips. He especially loved going home to Virginia and North Carolina to see family. He never missed attending his yearly family reunion. He loved playing his oldies in the car and going by the (beach) to meet up with some of the fellows or take a day to go fishing.
Goodie loved his Pittsburgh Steelers and was truly a loyal fan. He enjoyed watching his cowboys and old western movies and his cooking shows. Goodie was an excellent cook and made the best potato salad. One of his favorite pastimes was going up to Lancaster, Pa. to Shady Maples Buffet. He enjoyed the scenic ride but most definitely the food. Goodie loved to eat good food!
There was only one thing missing in Goodie’s life these past 5 1/2 years. That was his precious Debbie. His heart was broken the day she went home to be with Lord. I imagine as Goodie laid in the hospital on February 24th on his 50th wedding anniversary, Debbie came to him and said sweetheart come on home. His heart and body are a whole again because he is home with his sweetheart and home with his Lord.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children: DiShawn Batts (Roger), Eric Goodwyn (La Shawnda); Grandchildren: Larry, Janay, Ebony, Bernard, Michael, Thurman, Kameren, Kimesha, Honey, Laron, Marquis, Erica, Daytwan, Fantasia, Gwanesha, Ery’elle, Eric Jr, Stephon, and Rashir; Great-Grandchildren: Isaiah, Amera, Autumn, Yu’najah, Anastasia, Jameer, Oscar, Robert, Aniyah, and Kashmi; Siblings: Ruth Brown (Petersburg, VA,) Barbara Gale, Eddie Lloyd Goodwyn Jr., Rosalie Rudd and Lois Goodwyn; Brother-in laws: James, Irvin and William Bacon; Sister-in-law Virginia Phillips (Rich Square, NC). God children Anthony Robbins, and Shywanna Goodwyn; Best friend: Larry Joyner; Special Friend: Paulette Walker, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Goodie was preceded in death by his wife Deborah M. Goodwyn (2013); his son Larry Goodwyn Jr.; his parents Eddie and Beatrice Goodwyn; In-laws Lillian and Paul Bacon; Brother Michael Goodwyn; step-mother Annie Lee Jefferson (Nana) (Petersburg, Va); his brother-in-law Paul Bacon; his sister-in-laws; Gwendolyn Shorts (Ralph), Beatrice Opie, and Madeline Goldsborough (Goldie).
