Lewis W. Martin, Sr. "Mr. Marty"

Lewis W Martin, Sr. (Mr. Marty) 87 of Bear Delaware was guided home by angels on Friday November 25, 2022,
peacefully in his home. He was born in Cape May, New Jersey on July 4, 1935, to Evelyn and Lorenzo Harris.

He is preceded in death by Evelyn Harris (mother), Lorenzo Harris Sr. (father), brothers Lorenzo Harris Jr.“Snoot”, Reginal Harris, William (Bill) Harris, Victor Harris and sister Theresa Harris.

He attended Howard High School and graduated in 1953. He married Marie Woodard in 1952. From their union were born three boys              Lewis W. Martin Jr “Coach Lew”, DeCosta M. Martin “Coss” and Anthony O. Martin Sr “BirdDee”. Marie Woodard Martin passed away on November 19, 2012. From the marriage of Lois Jolly two children were born, Joy R Martin, Vincent Martin and a stepson Anthony Jolly. Marty later married Alice Jackson in 1994. He had a special friend Elizabeth “Liz” Lewis who was with him in his later years.

He received his education at Howard High School class of 53’. He’s been a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for over 40 years. He was a member of the Male Chorus and All Music Ministries. He was VP and secretary of the male chorus. He sang with the JIC’s and the sanctuary choir. He enjoyed spreading the Word of Christ. He firmly believed that if you give your best to God, He will give you HIS. He loved singing for the Lord. His favorite songs were “Lord I Tried and Only What You Do for Christ Will Last”. His favorite scripture is the 37th Psalm.
Marty enjoyed deep sea fishing, camping with his boys, competitive bowling, singing nd (oh boy!) could he sing. He loved traveling to Mexico, Las Vegas, the Bahamas, cruises and serving in his church in various compacities.

He was known for his beautiful smile, his wonderful personality, soft heart, willingness to help where he could and not ask for anything in return. He owned and operated a tire and auto repair shop which he started in 1963 until he retired in 2018. That’s 55 years, his business was called “Marty’s Tire Service” with the slogan “Be a Smarty Call Marty” which was so fiƫting. A very nice dresser who loved to accent his attire with one
of his many fedora hats and you couldn’t miss him.

Of all his possessions he always proclaimed his children as his most precious prize. He talked about them so very oŌen during those good times and even during his declining health. He wanted everyone to know family was the one thing that brought him the most joy and happiness.

His survivors include sister Sevella Jones of Wilmington; children Lewis Martin Jr (Coach Lew) wife Carolyn, DeCosta Martin, Anthony Martin Sr (Birdie), Joy Martin and Vincent Martin of Florida. Grandchildren - Carenda Martin, Lewis Martin III (Christine), Lewis G Martin(Cassandra), DeOnna Martin, DeCosta Lewis, Detra Flowers, Dana Trapp, Marcus Grier (Zarraya), Serena Wilson-Archie (Anthony), Anthony Martin Jr (Akili),\        Brianja McCain, Brandon Martin, Brittany Martin, Justice Dixon

Great grandchildren - Wesley and Cora Martin, Sharnae and Jalynn Jackson, Elyjah Martin, Thuron and Dorian Archie, Kyloan, Ryan, Prince Jordan, Lil Brandon, Brian and Amina, Amyah, Mylaje, Zyheen, Azaria and Shyla. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral service will be held at Mother U.A.M.E. Church, 701 East 5th Street Wilmington De 19801, on Friday December 9th. Viewing will be 9 to 10:45 am with the service at 11:00 am.
