“For when I was hungry you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
Matthew 25:35 New International Version
Mary Grace Cornish was born to the late Jackson and Ardonia Copes on April 22, 1925 in Accomack, Virginia. She moved to Wilmington, Delaware at a young age where she met and married Ellsworth S. Cornish. Mary had two beloved children who preceded her in death, Ellsworth “Joe” Cornish and Simone Sewell.
For her entire adult life Mary worshiped at Ezion-Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. And she was more than a Christian in name only. As an ardent practitioner of the faith, anyone who knew “Mom Mary” knew they had a place to stay and a warm meal whenever they needed it. She was always more than willing to share whatever she had.
Mary Grace had style. Her Sunday church outfits topped off with the perfect matching hat, tilted just so. And any visit to her home, especially during the holidays, was always memorable for the wonderful aromas emanating from her kitchen.
“Mom-Mom” will be missed by her four grandchildren: Jamelle Singleton, Marcus Sewell, Jamal Cornish and Christopher Cornish and her two great-grandchildren. Before she passed away, she had the opportunity to visit with her extended family on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia whom she loved dearly and was loved in return.
Mary Grace used to say, “I’m blessed by the best and praying for the rest”, and now that God has called her home, we can hear Him say, “Well done my good and faithful servant…”
