Mary “Mudder” Winston was born in Messongo, VA on July 17, 1917, to Walter Sr. and Hester Owens, and moved to Wilmington, DE as a young girl.
Mary attended Howard High School in Wilmington, DE. In her early years, Mary was employed by Dravo Corporation and, at the age of 70, she became a caregiver to a retired doctor and various other individuals. Mudder’s hobbies included cooking, reading the Bible, ironing, and caring for others. She also enjoyed her position as the “secretary” of her daughter’s bus trips.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Frank Winston Jr.; her parents, Walter Sr. and Hester Owens; her brothers, Taft, Walter Jr., Ottoway, Samuel, James, and several other siblings; and her God-daughter, Ruby Young.
She leaves behind, to cherish her memories, daughter Mary “Newtney” Dale; grandsons, Clifton Dale Jr and Aaron Dale (of Allentown, PA); great-granddaughters, Shenique Dale Bryant, Syreeta Brown, and Sharmaine Dale; great-great-grandsons, Jace Niles, Roosevelt Bryant, Jackson Lockett, and Cameron Hoffman; Goddaughter Celeste Lofland, God-grandson, Justin “Bom Bom” Lofland-Johnson; best friends, Ms. LA, Ms. Josephine Tyler, Ms. Marian Clarke, Ms. Rose; God-grandchildren Wanda Young and Cheryl Young; many special family friends and bus-trip friends, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, adopted grandchildren, and other family members.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday August 4, 2018 at Stronghold Deliverance Ministry , 404 Bradford Street Wilmington, DE 19801. Viewing from 9am-11am, Service at 11:00 am.
Interment, Delaware Veterans Cemetery.
