Norman Pierce, Sr. son of the late William H. and Bertha Taylor Pierce, departed this life on May 9, 2022, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, with his wife and sons at his side.
Norman was born in Wilmington Delaware on December 3, 1949 and received his education at the Absalom Jones Elementary, Brandywine Springs, and Dickinson High School. He worked for over 40 years via sub-contracts in building services and maintenance at Atlas chemicals/ICI Americas, NKS distributors and JP Morgan Chase. However, his lifelong calling and passion was farming and gardening – particularly caring for his prized rabbits, horses, goats, poultry, and dogs. Norman enjoyed all things related to animals and judged show rabbits at the Delaware State Fair and Maryland’s Queen Anne and Cecil County Fairs. Over the years, he received many awards, and attended many Agriculture workshops, conferences and events held at Delaware State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and other colleges throughout the US.
Norman was a founding member of the First State African American Farmers Association and served as associate board supervisor for the New Castle County Conservation Di/strict until his death.
Cherishing him in memories are his wife Gwendolyn W. Pierce, his sons: Norman Pierce, Jr. (wife Nicole) and Steve Wilson (wife Yanick); grandsons, Nigel Pierce and Amare Wilson, special ‘grandson’ William Lewis; his siblings; Elease Moss, Audrey (and James) Dillard, Delores Pierce, William D. Pierce, Arletta Wiggins, Betty (and Russell) Lee, many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving family members and friends.
Preceding him in death his brothers Rayfield Taylor, Bernard, Alvin, and Rudolph Pierce; a sister Ruth McWilliams, sisters-in-law Sandra Pierce and Margo Anderson, and brothers-in-law James Moss, Tony Pierce, and Walter Wiggins.
Celebration of his life will take place on Friday May 27, 2022 at 11 am. Viewing 9-10:45 am, Mother UAME Church,701 E. 5th St. Wilm., DE 19801.Interment, Gracelawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Masks are required.
