PASTOR ALBERTA DELANEY JACKSON
Pastor Alberta D Jackson, the daughter of the late Mary D Moore and the late Albert Taylor Sr. came into the world January 20, 1931 and peacefully transitioned February 17, 2019. She was reared in Wilmington Delaware by her mother Mary and Grandmother Hallie Lockett Delaney. She was known by many names: Bert, mom, mom mom, auntie, Iya & Pastor just to name a few.
Pastor Alberta was the youngest child of Albert Taylor, Sr. She was preceded in death by her sisters Elizabeth Frances, Val Dora Taylor, Evelyn Simmons, LeeAnna Taylor, & her brother Albert Taylor Jr.
Alberta attended Wilmington public schools and graduated from Howard High School where she met Joseph B. Jackson, Jr. They married and became the parents of seven children.
Alberta’s employment included being one of the pioneers of the Head Start program at Shortlidge Elementary school in 1965 as a teacher’s aide. In 1970 she became employed as a teacher’s aide at West Center City Day Care at 9 th & Washington St in Wilmington, Delaware and also when the center moved to its present location 600 Madison St. Alberta was with West Center City Day Care for 15 years.
Alberta was a helper in the community. She became a volunteer with Mr. Howard at the Boys & Girls club held at Trinity Church at Delaware Ave. & Adams St.
Alberta liked to travel. She visited the Bahamas & Jamaica as well as different states in the USA. One of her most memorable trips was in 1994 when she went to Africa. She visited Lagos & Ibadan in Nigeria. She had the opportunity to stay in the home of one of the top officials Judge Onalaja. While there she was given an official African name, IYALODE ABEKE OMOTAYO JACKSON. This name means mother of mothers. She was considered a mother to more people than just her biological children.
In 1963, Alberta turned her life over to Almighty God. 1980 she was ordained Evangelist Alberta Jackson under Bishop H. M. Harris and Elder Louise Hall. She became Pastor Alberta Jackson of Holy Trinity Pentecostal Church, Inc. in Wilmington Delaware until her health declined.
Pastor Alberta had a beautiful singing voice and often sang solos while in high school. This carried over into her adult life and you could always hear her singing in church. Some of her favorite songs were Jesus Loves Me, He’s sweet I Know, This Little Light of Mine, Walk around Heaven and You are so Beautiful. Two of her recent recording artist were Bryan Andrew Wilson and Tamela Mann.
Along with her parents and sisters & brother, Alberta was preceded in death by her son Joseph Phelan Jackson, baby daughter Mary Elizabeth Jackson, granddaughters Tania Malone Jackson & Sydni Charday Hackett, great grandsons Karon, & Benjamin, her former husband Joseph B. Jackson, Jr. and a host of other relatives & ancestors.
She leaves to cherish memories a legacy of 194 family members. Children Ardythe (Robert) Evans, Terrin, Whynell, A. Durelle & Craig Jackson. 43 grands, 96 great grands, 47 great great grands and more on the way. Daughter in Law Myra Bean, sister Doris Bell, cousins June Cain & Diane Delaney. Spiritual daughters Erma Cunningham, Dora Harris, Martina Spady , Denise DeRamus, Iyo Walker & Ola as well as others too numerous to name. Brother in laws Leon (Sheila) Jackson, Arvon Jackson, Robert Jackson, Howard Brown. Host of spiritual children, nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
Pastor Alberta was a true servant of God. She was a praying woman. Always thanking God for everything.
A celebration of her life will be Friday March 1, 2019, Mother UAME Church, 701 E. 5th Street, Wilmington Delaware. Viewing is private. Service, 11 AM. Interment, Silverbrook Cemetery.
